Cake, cake, cake…

My least favorite thing is when people call things DIY that require a whole bunch of skills, patience, time, etc. that most folks don’t have. Especially moms. So, I won’t say decorating this cake is “DIY”… or for everybody… but if you are interested in how I decorated this ombre frosted Lambo-themed cake for my son’s birthday, keep reading:)

What you will need:

  • Piping bags (or gallon ziplock bags if you don’t have any) for frosting

  • Buttercream frosting (store-bought is fine, but I like a good buttercream)

  • Black food coloring

  • Two or three 8 inch round cakes (any flavor you prefer - we went with Oreo since I planned to use crushed Oreo’s as a topping)

  • Fondant - I use this marshmallow recipe here.

  • Fondant letter cutters (like these)

  • Oreo cookies or topping of your choice

  • Gallon ziplock bag for crushing cookies

What you will do:

1) Bake your cakes according to the recipe/instructions. set aside to cool.

2) While cakes are cooling, separate frosting into three batches.

3) Mix a few drops of food coloring into one batch and mix until you achieve a dark gray color.

4) Mix a few drops of food coloring into another batch of frosting and mix until you achieve a lighter gray color.

5) Leave the last frosting batch white/off white.

Don’t worry about sounding professional. Sound like you. There are over 1.5 billion websites out there, but your story is what’s going to separate this one from the rest. If you read the words back and don’t hear your own voice in your head, that’s a good sign you still have more work to do.

Be clear, be confident and don’t overthink it. The beauty of your story is that it’s going to continue to evolve and your site can evolve with it. Your goal should be to make it feel right for right now. Later will take care of itself. It always does.
